Copied coupon

I found this today on the WFMU website, and it brings a huge smile to my face. Apparently someone RE-DREW the coupon I made and presented it to the record fair to get a discount on admission. Love it! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Turkey drawings

More sketches during lunchtime at AMNH. Did you know that the wild turkey had a magical horn? Think on that during Thanksgiving.

JFK and Caroline

This is an illustration I did a ways back when Caroline Kennedy was thinking about running for office. I drew JFK above her, placing a tiara on her head, as if to pass on the Kennedy legacy.

AI-AP the BIG TALK and video featuring ME

This week is Illustration Week in NYC and as part of it AI-AP sponsored "The BIG TALK" with discussions about illustration and photography with art directors and with the jurors who picked the images for this years annual. The panel in the top photo is Whitney Johnson/NYTimes, Casey Tierney/Real Simple, Jody Quon/New York Magazine, Jordan Awan/NYorker, Jennifer Daniel/NYTimes, Chad Beckerman/Abrams Publishing and Alexandra Zsigmond/NYTimes. As a part of "The Big Talk" they showed a video of the weekend I spent with other artists creating one of a kind book covers with our own artwork on them. My face flashed on the screen a coupla times, but I was able to get a crappy photo of my hand painting on one of the book covers. (I put in a inset photo of the actual cover I was painting at the time) And if you squint really hard you can see my name on the end credits as well.

Lou Reed 1942-2013

Goodbye Coney Island Baby.

AI-AP live book cover project

I was invited to join in a live book cover project by the folks over at American Illustration. Each year they put out an annual of top illustrators, and I was chosen to be in it. The annual is being produced in two editions, one with a printed cover and another with a blank cover. Out of the hundreds of artists selected to be in the annual, I was one chosen to create covers on the spot, one book at a time. I ended up making 12 covers, but here are a few that I managed to photograph with my phone. Better images were taken by a professional photographer, those will posted once I get a hold of 'em.

My first smartphone layout!

This is an ad I created for WFMU's annual record fair. I drew the illustration and created the text layout. The format is for the iPhone and will be available soon! Kinda exciting for me to be creating something for smartphones, seeing as I just bought my first one less than a week ago.

Monster bras

Follow up to Monster Hairdos. I am beginning to think of expanding this to a whole series of monster themed pages. Suggestions welcomed!

World Trade Center

This is an old drawing I did way back in 1993 after the first bombing of the World Trade Center. I had just moved to New York City for the first time earlier that year from St Louis (you can see a teeny-tine Arch on the horizon). This was a pretty scary thing for me, but I decided to put myself in the foreground as not being dazed by it. Just another day in the big, bad apple. Little did I know what was to come.

Michael Bloomberg filter fun

I did this drawing way back when in 2001, after Michael Bloomberg was first elected. I was more interested in his neck flaps than in him as a candidate. After I scanned the original, I went ahead and applied some Photoshop filters and was happy with some of the results. I should do some more mayoral portraits with neck flaps now that Bloomberg is leaving office.

Submission for NoMAA

Being a somewhat recently new resident of Upper Manhattan, I happened to find NoMAA, or Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance. They had a call for submissions from artists living "river to river above 155th Street" Since I qualify, I thought I would submit some art that had to do with some of the other residents of the neighborhood. The first being Margaret Corbin, who has an amazing story of defending New York in the revolutionary war up at Fort Tryon, roughly around 202nd Street. And the next is a painting from a photograph I took out my window of a red tailed hawk perching on a fire escape in the rain. Washington Heights is known for it's influx of immigrants, glad to see the red-tailed hawk on that list.

Philip Johnson estate map

This is a project I got to work on for the Philip Johnson Glass House. It's an estate in New Canaan, CT that houses the epitome of "modern" architecture with the Glass House itself, along with several other structures built by Philip Johnson. I was commissioned to draw a map of the grounds for an upcoming fundraiser, which ended up not being used. I did, however, get to visit the site and have a private tour of the buildings. Really fantastic and way ahead of it's time. Worth the trip if you are in the greater NYC area. Above are sketches, watercolors, Adobe Illustrator artwork, etc.

New work "Agri vulture" on view at the Mulberry Street branch library

My friend Sherri has once again been a great contact for getting my work up in another New York Public library. The three paintings have a similar environmental theme, so I called it "Agrivulture." They are in the Mulberry Street branch, which is quite auspicious as I've been told that none other than DAVID BOWIE lives in the building. I am sure once he sees my work he will contact me right away and we will become best of friends. In the meantime, here are some photos of the work and the lobby of the library. Sherri has asked if she can interview me about the work, which will later be on a library blog. More to come on those developments!
